History of Polygamy...
Mormon polygamy....
Saudi man with 58 wives stirs polygamy debate

"More than 100,000 people practice polygamy in the United States but it is particularly concentrated in the western states, especially Utah, where this illegal practice is increasing each day.

In the Spring of 1998 TAP brought worldwide attention to the horrific abuses that occur within these secret polygamous societies such as incest, statutory rape, underage marriage, welfare fraud, tax evasion, lack of education, trafficking of minors across boarders for the purpose of sex, medical neglect, and extreme forms of domestic abuse & mental torture.

The Mormon fundamentalist tradition has been interwoven into Utah’s culture for so long that today it is being protected by the ACLU, local NOW, and much of the state of Utah as a religious freedom without any regard for the polygamous women and children whose human rights are being violated. Today Utah’s state government still refuses to take any preventative or pro-active measures to rid Utah of polygamy.
As a State and as a Nation, we must not forget the tens of thousands of polygamous children and adults who are being coerced into this Taliban way of life. "

To understand why, begin with two crucial words. The first is "marriage." Group love (sometimes called polyamory) is already legal, and some people freely practice it. Polygamy asserts not a right to love several others but a right to marry them all. Because a marriage license is a state grant, polygamy is a matter of public policy, not just of personal preference.

The second crucial word is "polygyny." Unlike gay marriage, polygamy has been a common form of marriage since at least biblical times, and probably long before. In his 1994 book The Moral Animal: The New Science of Evolutionary Psychology, Robert Wright notes that a "huge majority" of the human societies for which anthropologists have data have been polygamous. Virtually all of those have been polygynous: that is, one husband, multiple wives. Polyandry (one wife, many husbands) is vanishingly rare. The real-world practice of polygamy seems to flow from men's desire to marry all the women they can have children with.

... in today's world, i don't find it necessary because there is opportunities for most women to stand on their feet. agey kar din e ei method use kora hoto to support women when they no one else stood up for them.

no. personally, if i had to marry a man who suppose had 3 more wives, i would not be comfortable because i would i not like sharing them sharing his house, love nd bed with me.

in my opinion, majority for sex. bhalo intention e keo kore bole amar mone hoi na (although, i know of this one case where the guy wanted to do a second marriage nd was ready to tell his other wife but for some reasons the story never worked out). anyway, why i said sex ... there is this guy i know. he is like he wants to marry so many girls because of that nd also because his religion says so. ami bollam yea, bola ase, but baki kotha ta jano? je shob bou ke aki shoman shob kisu dite hobe nd they all have to know about each other? he did not know that nd he's like na amon kotha naki kothao bola nai. i truly found him pathetic.

some maybe for culture ... for example: the Mormons. it's been their tradition for years.

Personally I don't agree with it as I cant see myself doing it, but frm an Islamic perspective I think one shd have the right to do so if he's able to meet all requirements mentioned in the religion.

did you guys know?
girls can marry a lot of guys too. that practice is known as polyandry.
it happened in Nepal (not sure if it still happens). hoisilo because the economy was very poor and several men were required to support one woman and children.

Pori's responses are very interesting!! Learned so much from them, and I agree with them too!!

No I don't support polygamy. When Islam allowed 4 wives per man, it was because back in those days many men were sent to war, so the women to men ratio was high. Women also needed men for social/economical support as Pori mentioned. Thus Islam's solution to these two problems combined was to allow polygamy. It's not necessary nowadays. But men still do it because they 'can' and for sex Not good!!

Amar mone hoi 4ta bou ke equal treat kora shombhob if you're really following an ideal Islamic lifestyle karon tokhon life onek simple hobe. karon tokhon apne materialistic things er attraction thakbe na wch wud make it impossible to treat equally. it may be very very difficult but it can be done.
