bracNet: How did you come up with the name Artcell?
C&S: We spent a lot of time searching for the right name and eventually Ershad came up with it. Even though we were a heavy metal band when we started, we didn't want a heavy metal name. We wanted a softer or an artistic touch to the heavy metal side. 'Cells where art is produced' - that was pretty much the basic idea behind the name 'Artcell.' Ershad came up with it and we all opted for it.
bracNet: Who or what was the inspiration behind Artcell?
C&S: We all used to love playing our instruments. I (Cezanne) started playing bass 3 years before we formed the band. Lincoln and Ershad have been playing the guitar since the age of seven. Our passion for playing instrument has led us to form this band. But more importantly, we inspired each other a lot. When we started working together, the fact that the 4 of us together could create some kind of tune, felt very satisfying and inspirational.
Shaju adds: Whenever we used to see live shows, we wondered what it'd be like to perform on stage one day. I wasn't into performing music back then but I would always love live music and that was my primary influence.
bracNet: How did the four of you get together?
C&S: Basically the four of us got together to jam to some metallica numbers since we all liked metallica. And then Ershad had some of his own compositions so we thought lets try out our own compositions. Initially in concerts, we'd only cover the metallica numbers but then when we started playing our compositions and got appreciated by the crowd, we decided to move ahead with the band.
bracNet: What was your target crowd when you started?
C&S: Back in those days, the underground scene was much smaller than it is now. The target crowd then was the "university/college-going-rock music-loving" young people. So they were our target crowd back then. Now, that crowd has grown as much as the rock scene has. So basically our audience has been vastly influenced by the underground scene- a whole new generation of music lovers has been formed.
bracNet: How do you differentiate your music from others?
C&S: First of all, we feel think we are a bit 'instrumentally challenged' in that we try to experiment with our instruments. I think that is how we could be different from others.
Going back in history, the true heavy metal scene in Bangladesh started from the days of Warfaze, etc. But for a long period of about 5-6 yrs, this scene was void until bands like Cryptic fate, Tantrik, Dethrow, etc came up. We, also, tried to sustain this rock scene by forming Artcell. Inspite of the commercial pop or softer genre base scene, at a time like that, the fact that we could sustain the rock scene and come up with heavy metal numbers- we feel, makes us different. It was all about what we liked playing because heavy metal was our passion and we wanted to keep this scene alive. And the audience actually liked what we made! Many bands nowadays create various different kinds of music, like they will have songs from different genres, but we try and stick to heavy metal only. Even our few softer tunes have a heavy metal touch.
bracNet: How much do you think you have achieved as a band?
C&S: We didn't really start with an aim, but yeah we had some kind of expectation and we went way beyond it a long time ago. We never really expected to be appreciated this much. The release of our first album was like a challenge - we wanted to see how the crowd reacted to our loud, heavy metal tunes
We had our first solo concert at the Russian Cultural Center in 2001. In a 300 capacity place, 500 + ppl turned up. That was hugely flattering. That was a very positive response. It's amazing - Our fans till today have been very supportive and we are always very thankful to them.
bracNet: Your most memorable concert?
C&S: Our first solo concert. Even though it was a small-scale concert, it was a 3 hour show and we had some guest appearances like Shakib (cryptic fate), Shumon, Jewel, and Jon. It was very memorable.
bracNet: What type of band music is popular nowadays?
C&S: Most probably all types of rock and alternative. Bangladesh is all about rock music really. There are many more other genres but we don't really see a band that plays any other type of music. Rock is predominantly popular.
bracNet: What is the future of band music in Bangladesh?
C&S: We did an open air concert in Kolkata a few days ago. Artcell, Warfaze and two other underground bands - metal maze and ?? virus. There is a huge market for rock music in kolkata but comparatively the Bengali band musicians there are at least 10 yrs behind us. The underground musicians in Bangladesh are so serious about their music that it is almost like there has been a revolution in the music sector. Some people may overlook this but it is a huge thing. The future definitely looks bright. A lot of albums are coming out, lot of good sounds are being produced, lot of good bands, good musicians, guitarists and bassists and newcomers and also a LOT of listeners are out there now.
bracNet: How prospective is the underground music scene?
C&S: We will try to bring the underground bands to the mainstream. Instead of just trying to move to the mainstream ourselves, I feel that us, the more established bands should try and create a bigger platform so that it becomes easier for the newer underground bands to move to mainstream music.
bracNet: Please give some advice to the underground bands on how to proceed to be more established band like you
C&S: You do whatever you like and whatever you love. That's what we did as well. The underground bands are very serious and passionate about the instruments they play- that is a very good thing. Just keep playing what you play. Because when four or five good musicians play together, the end result is bound to be good
bracNet: What are your future plans? Will you try out anything different?
C&S: Our second album (Oniket Prantor) sounds totally different from the first one. As we said before, we like to experiment with music. We don't really worry about whether the crowd will like what we make. Rather we create what we like. We are always very open to good music. And we believe that if a particular piece has contributions from the four of us, it will sound like an 'artcell' work.
We would definitely like to perform more solo concerts in the future. Bangladesh doesn't really do too many solo shows but we would like to do solo performances. And about our forthcoming album, we don't want to get into too much detail about the theme before it is released. It's an album with 10 tracks and they are a bit lengthy. There is some kind of coordination with the music and lyrics.
