However, DT began its journey back in 1985 when 'Berklee School of Music' students John Petrucci, Mike Portnoy and John Myung decided to start a band together. Originally known as Majesty, the fledging act recruited keyboard player Kevin Moore and singer Chris Collins into the fold. Collins eventually left, replaced by Charlie Dominici, while another band forced them to drop the Majesty moniker in favor of Dream Theater, named after a demolished California cinema.
"When Dream and Day Unite" had made an immediate impact on the underground progressive rock scene, but DT wanted to push further. Replacing Dominici with James LaBrie, the band recorded 1992's groundbreaking "Images and Words" under the label ATCO, later absorbed by Universal Records. Featuring the hit 'pull me under', the album introduced Dream Theater to hordes of new fans that continue to support the band to this day, and not to mention...I'm one of'em.
Many more studio albums followed including 1994's "Awake", 1997's "Falling into Infinity", and 1999's "Scenes From a Memory". At the same time, Kevin Moore gave way to Derek Sherinian (A Change of Seasons, 1995, that included a few live tributes), then Jordan Rudess. Then gradually released "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence" (2002), "Train of Thought" (2003), "Octavarium" (2005) and finally "Systematic Chaos" in 2007.
Other releases include Another Day (single, 1992), Live at the Marquee (1993), Lie (single, 1994), The Silent Man (single, 1994), Hollow Years (single, 1997), Once in a LIVEtime (1998), Through Her Eyes (single, 2000), Live Scenes from New York (CD+DVD, 2001), Live at Budokan (CD+DVD, 2004), Score - 20th Anniversary World Tour (CD+DVD, 2006), Systematic Chaos Special Edition (CD+DVD, 2007), Greatest Hit...and 21 other pretty cool songs (2008) and Chaos in Motion 2007/2008 (2008).
They are the best band in the world, in terms of playing skills and techniques and they're progressing with each album and tour.
Did u know??? Petrucci, Portnoy and Myung are drop-outs from Berklee. They didn't complete the course because they thought they had already learned enough!!! |

Morever, its never easy for a vocalist to stay focused when ur band mates are going nuts with odd time signatures i.e. 4x5, 8x7, 9x12 and sometimes 11.5x13.5 , and LaBrie just does it with utmost ease.
