The batteries were charged, the lights faded to black, the stage blackened as the crowd became frantic, the bands were all fueled and ready to seek and destroy as they prepared to pay tribute to Metallica. For four consecutive hours on April 20, everyone knew that nothing else mattered.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, by the time the sound and light people had completed the setup, it was already 3:00pm, the advertised opening time for the program. Usually for most underground concerts starting at that hour, people slowly start filtering in at around half past four, for any underground concert; however, this time around it was different. There was a murmur of ‘Metallica’ on everyone’s lips, starting from those who were at the Jumma prayers, right up to the bag boys on the streets. It seemed that this show had everyone wondering. Metallica is very popular amongst the metal heads of Dhaka and everyone seemed to be in high spirits awaiting the show.
Eager fans arrived at 3pm and witnessed the sound and light people doing the final check impatiently. Finally, at 4:15pm the show kicked off as Fear took to the stage and opened with ‘Unforgiven-2’. It is very common for opening bands to get stage fright, which seemed to be the case for them. They were missing beats and guitar riffs seemed slightly off. However, after a nervous start they got people involved with ‘So what’.
Next up was Steriod. This five-man band had played various gigs earlier, and people always had good things to say about them, however they seemed to be carrying with them the burden of being ‘at least one song screw up band at every gig’. This was not the case this time. People who had doubts about their talent received a pleasant surprise.
Steriod kicked the tribute show into motion. They played nonstop numbers, mostly from Metallica’s album Black — ‘Enter Sandman’, ‘Sad but true’ and ‘Fuel’. Their performance was flawless and they ended their set with ‘Nothing Else Matters’. They had set the standard for others to follow.
It appeared that Steriod left a mark and ‘Cynic X’ the next band had a lot to live up to. They were successful in doing so and left cynics in the audience speechless by starting off with a Metallica medley comprising of ‘Sad but true’, ‘Enter Sandman’, ‘For whom the bell tolls’, and ‘One’. They carried on with ‘I disappear’ from the Mission Impossible soundtrack and ended their play list with ‘Turn the page’. Everything about their performance was perfect; however the loud guitars and drums seemed to have the vocals screaming out at his peak as if he were about to spill out his lungs.
Proloy took over the reins from Cynic X, but in the end they could not do justice to Metallica. The band totally seemed to be lost for words and were strumming power chords at different tones. The vocals tried his best to mimic Hetfield as much as possible, but it should be noted that the nature of his voice could not even reach the depths of Hetfield’s. In this case, Incursion Music should also be partly blamed for not urging Proloy to practice and become perfect. All in all, disappointing.
The crowd at this point was very frustrated and needed to be reassured that the tribute show would not continue like this. And then came Mechanix. After an initial sound check, Tridib and his band took to the stage with ‘Master of puppets’. For a split second those waiting outside the auditorium thought Hetfield, Hammet, Newsted, and Ulrich had jumped on stage. Mechanix continued with Seek and Destroy, One and Justice for all, completing full tracks and left everyone in awe. They were the true sense of the word tribute.
As if it couldn’t get any better, Power surge, comprising of Nahian and Jamshyd, came onstage in army fatigues and death metal t-shirts. The evening just got better and better, as they started their set with ‘Blackened’. They continued with tracks which made Metallica great in the first place, ‘Welcome home.’ ‘Sanitarium’, ‘Damage Inc’, and ‘Battery’ to name but a few. Then they also performed a twenty minute medley of tracks from ‘Kill ’em all’ and ‘Ride the Lighting’. True professionals are the only way to describe them. And along with Mechanix, they also paid homage to Metallica in the highest form.
Throughout the evening, people were waiting for Cryptic Fate, but at the last minute Farhan informed Incursion Music that he was still in Chittagong for work and apologized for not being able to make it. The great camaraderie between members of different bands was put to the test. Agreeing to Incursion Music’s request, Nahian from Powersurge/Severe Dementia, Sarfaraz from Cryptic Fate, Shabab from Cynic X, and Rafa from Kral took to the stage for an unforgettable jamming session. Power chords and individual solos from the guitarists and the drummers, all in sync, deafened Nazrul Institute. Suddenly they decided to play ‘Enter Sandman’ and ‘Master of puppets’ which led to Jamshyd of Powersurge, Antone of Severe Dementia, and Rajib of Gene Split rushing onto the stage to spill out the vocals in death, black, and plain old metal form. For those who left early, this was probably the highlight of April 20, 2007 — the Metallica Tribute. New Age was a media partner of this event. - collected | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
