Police run amok at North South University

A three-hour-long sporadic baton charge by the police on students of the privately-run North South University at Banani in the city on Monday left over two dozen students injured. Following the incident, the university authorities suspended all academic activities on Tuesday.

The clashes ensued when a team of Rajuk led by magistrate ASM Emdadur Dastagir and accompanied by police from Gulshan police station was dismantling several ground-floor structures of a building on Kemal Ataturk Avenue.

Owned by Bangladesh Thai Aluminum Limited, the first five floors of the building houses several classrooms and two activity rooms of North South University.

During the drive, the police tried clearing the area in front of the building at about 5:00pm as scores of students were coming out of the building at the break of a class hour. After a warning, according to eyewitnesses, the police started charging baton on the students who were slowly clearing out.

At this point, several students tried to come to the rescue of their fellow classmates. A scuffle began and the police started beating some of them with batons. Several students received head injuries and others were left with minor injuries.

After the university authorities called the Gulshan police station, the officer in-charge, Obaidur Rahman, arrived at the spot where students were blocking traffic protesting against the beating and demanding official action.

Following a meeting with the vice-chancellor, the pro vice-chancellor, and the chairman of the university’s board of directors, the officer in-charge verbally apologised to the students for the police excesses.

A captain of the Banani Army Camp was also present during the mediation.

Meanwhile, as the official meeting between the university and law enforcing authorities was taking place, another scuffle started between a camera crew of the private television channel, Channel 1, and the agitated students.

Talking to New Age, both the officials of the university and several eyewitnesses mentioned the provocation of several ‘outsiders’ when the second incident took place.

At one point, the police indiscriminately baton-charged the students once again to break up the scuffle. Several students were injured. One student with serious head injuries was rushed to a nearby clinic. Five other students were also admitted injured with minor injuries at various hospitals of the city.

‘The police started to beat us indiscriminately and without warning after we had come out from an exam at the BTA building. I was hit in the abdomen area, where I had had surgery two months back,’ said Riazul Amin, a third-year business student who was released from the Holy Family Hospital later in the evening.

Talking to New Age, Dr Mostaque Ahmed Zebal, director of the university’s School of Business, who was seen trying to calm the students down, said, ‘Our students have never been part of any violence or provocation. This is a very unfortunate incident. The police did not have any consideration or reason to beat these students. Scores have been injured.’

Though the officer in-charge of the Gulshan police station was not available for comment despite repeated attempts, duty officer sub-inspector Ziaur Rahman told New Age that ‘students tried obstructing the eviction drive of Rajuk and that resulted in a clash’.

He also said, ‘When the students tried to beat up a cameraman of Channel 1, the police tried to save him. This resulted in another scuffle with the police.’

He informed that no case had been filed with the police till the filing of this report at 11:00pm Monday.
