A "commander" of the separatist United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), fighting for the freedom of the Indian state of Assam, has admitted that his group attacked a rally of the Awami League on August 21 2004, killing several party leaders, a senior police officer said.ULFA's self styled Pallav Saikia, arrested in the northeast Indian city of Shillong on December 14 last year, has told the Assam police special branch and India's central intelligence bureau during interrogations that 11 ULFA fighters led by him lobbed grenades and fired assault rifles into the Awami League rally. Assam police special branch chief Khagen Sarmah told bdnews24.com that Pallav confessed they attacked the Awami League rally at the "explicit instruction" of the ULFA military wing chief Paresh Barua.

heard about it and I was kind of shocked,since I thought JMB/Jmaat/Shibir were responsible.ULFA was hired by BD intelligence officials,they said.Maybe it was the DGFI or the NSI or BNP government elements who wanted Shakhsina to be removed,hehe.

I think some of our armed forces personnel hated Hasina.really hated her,there was even a coup attempt by some army officers during Hasina's tenure.at that time they used the LTTE.

"Some Bangladesh intelligence officials helped us plan the assault and even gave us the vehicles for the assault that morning, but I don't know these Bangladeshis."

BNP-Jamaat govt masterminded Aug 21 massacre: Quader

Dhaka, Jan 20 (bdnews24.com)—Awami League Joint-Secretary Obaidul Qauder Saturday said the previous BNP-Jamaat government was the mastermind behind the August 21 grenade attack on Sheikh Hasina.

"Ask the former prime minister Khaleda Zia, her son Tarique Rahman, former ministers Moudud Ahmed and Nazmul Huda for their links with ULFA," Qauder said when his attention was drawn to a bdnews24.com news item on ULFA's link with the attack in 2004.

He said the prime target of the grenade attack was the then Leader of the Opposition Sheikh Hasina.

Earlier, AL presidium member Zillur Rahman, whose wife and AL leader Ivy Rahman was killed in the grenade attack at Bangabandhu Avenue, ruled out ULFA involvement in the massacre. Rahman also smelt 'conspiracy' behind efforts to make ULFA responsible for the attack.

my best guess-BNP/Jamaat together with pro-BNP elements within the military intelligence hired the ULFA for this(they mentioned intelligence officials).I can get it why they might have wanted to do it.Hasina was severely 'anti-state' at that time.

Assam security analyst Jaideep Saikia, who has edited a book on Bangladesh last year, says:

“We have always suspected that the ULFA was given shelter by the BNP regime despite furious Indian protests because it wanted to use them against the political opposition particularly the Awami League.”

Anyhow, their might be some link in this attack from the previous 2001-2006 government. We cannot blame the whole BNP, kichu oti-uthsahi loker long term plan. Ei plan ta impliment hoile, oder hisabe Jamat could stay for more 20 yrs. As they calculated without Al, jamat could be the main opposition party.

ULFA chairman denies role in Hasina attack
ULFA chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa has denied his group's involvement in any armed action in Bangladesh.Reacting to a report sourced to Assam's police intelligence Khagen Sarmah, Rajkhowa said the confession from ULFA commander Pallav Saikia was "extracted after heavy torture" by Indian intelligence officials.
