I will say depends on your purpose. I will write few lines here.
If you are a professional photographer (or wanna be), SLR or DSLR are the camera for you. These cameras are expensive. But still if you can spend enough money, I will suggest you to buy Canon EOS Rebel XTi. This is a beginner level camera (but for professionals), and pretty cheap (with lenses around $800-$1000).
I hope you don't want to get ripped off.. :P.... I recently bought Canon's A720 IS, which is pretty cheap (around $200), gives you flexibility of adding lenses and filters. If you are planning to take few professional or immature photos, this might be a good choice. It was released this January, so comes with Canon's latest image processors and all existing technologies. It has options for both auto and manual. (Con: takes too long to charge the flash).
If you want a camera to take family pictures, then there is plenty of cameras. For good cameras, I always think Canon and Nikon are best cause their most of the models don't have much problem. Others depend on the model.
