Baikal Lake, The Deepest Freshwater Lake

Baikal, Lake or Baykal, Lake, in southern Siberia, Russia. With a maximum depth of 1,637 m (5,371 ft), it is the deepest lake in the world and is estimated to contain approximately one-fifth of all the Earth's surface freshwater, as well as hundreds of unique animal and plant species.



The lake has an area of about 31,500 sq km (12,200 sq mi), and it has about 1,960 km (1,220 mi) of shoreline, making it the third-largest body of water in Asia.

The lake is fed by the Selenga, Barguzin, and Verkhnaya Angara rivers and by more than 300 mountain streams.



The Baikal, Barguzin, and other mountain ranges surround the lake, rising on all shores except the south-eastern Selenga delta. Some are higher than 2,000 m (6,560 ft). Lake Baikal has several islands, the largest of which is Olkhon.

Baikal is known for the remarkable clarity of its waters and for the great diversity of its plant and animal life; the majority of species found in the lake are endemic, including the unique freshwater seals, which must have migrated upriver from the sea (probably during an ice age) and become isolated—the lake is 1,700 km (1,060 mi) from the sea.

The sturgeon, salmon, and freshwater-seal fisheries of the lake are valuable, and large quantities of other fish are also caught. Petroleum wells and mineral and hot springs are found in the vicinity. The southern shores of the lake are inhabited by the Buryats (see Buryatia), an indigenous Siberian people.


In 1996 Baikal was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
