But this has not always been so. Legend has it that many, many years ago the cat and the rat were friends. True friends. They lived next door to each other, they helped each other with work and any problems that came up from day to day, and they took great pleasure in scampering up and down the village streets together -- enjoying all the things cats and rats like to do.
The cat was more than willing to accompany the rat from shop to shop to find the tastiest cheese to be had. And the rat, in turn, went with the cat to all the fish markets and helped him to find the fish he liked best.
Then came hard times. There was a drought in the land where they lived. Food became scarce. There was no more cheese for the rat, no more fish for the cat, and very few other things either could eat.
Finally, the famine became so dreadful the cat and the rat decided they would have to go to another country.
They packed a few belongings in their knapsacks and planned their journey, toward the West. The rat would have preferred to tramp eastward because he had heard that there was a wide river between them and the West, and he didn’t know how to swim. But the cat insisted that prospects for finding food would be much better if they went to the West. Reluctantly the rat agreed -- provided the cat would help him carry a sweet potato he had been hoarding for weeks.
The cat didn’t care for sweet potatoes, but he knew his friend did; so he said he would help carry the prized potato. When he saw the size of it, though, he almost backed out of the bargain. It was an enormous potato! But, the cat held his tongue and they started on their journey, with one end of the giant potato on the cat’s shoulder, the other end strapped across the rat’s back. It wasn’t easy going.
Before noonday they came upon the river the rat had heard about. As soon as they could ease the potato to the ground, they rushed up to the edge of the bluff to have a close look.
“Wow! This river is wide!” exclaimed the cat.
“It looks dreadfully deep!” the rat answered, as if he were almost ready to weep.
Out in the middle of the river were places where the water swirled round and round in whirlpools that seemed to reach out and grab leaves and floating twigs and suck them under.
The cat wasn’t too certain he could swim across. The rat was so terrified he could hardly bear to peep down at the swift, muddy water.
“This is a problem,” the cat admitted. “I guess we should have gone to the East.”
The rat didn’t make any comment. Then. suddenly he exclaimed, “I’ve got it! I know how we can get across!”
“How?”
“We’ll make a boat out of my potato! I’ll eat off the top and part of the inside, but leave it thick on the sides and bottom! I know it’ll float!”
“Rat, you are a genius!”
Soon they were in the boat, starting across. Cat stood erect in the bow, paddling with a wide stick he had found. Rat sat low in the stern, using a smaller stick as a rudder.
“This is actually fun!” the cat hollered out, loud enough to be heard above the gushing water. “Don’t you think it’s fun?”
“Yeah!” the rat called back. To himself he thought: “It would be more fun if I were not still so hungry.”
The rat knew the cat would keep looking straight ahead; so now and then he stooped over and nibbled a bite out of the bottom of the potato. He told himself there was no danger of gnawing a hole through the peeling. But just as they reached midstream, that’s exactly what happened! Water began to spurt in!”
“Cat! Row faster! Row faster! We’re gonna sink!”
“What happened?” cried Cat.
Then he saw what had happened.
“You idiot!”
“We’re going down! Help me, Cat! I can’t swim!”
“It would serve you right to drown! Drowning is too good for you! You’ve got to be punished! So, I’ll just eat you up!”
“Oh, no!”
By this time the potato boat was gone, the cat was treading water, and the rat was holding on to his friend, for dear life.
“Save me, Cat! I’ll do anything for you! Anything! I didn’t mean to eat a hole in our boat! Honest! I just nibbled a little too deep!”
“A likely excuse!”
“Please, please don’t eat me!”
“Well, I won’t eat you till we get to the other side. Catch hold of my tail and I’ll pull you on across.”
The rat grabbed the cat’s tail, and breathed a sigh of relief. He began to thank the cat profusely and at the same time he tried to think how be could save his hide.
Finally they reached the bank. As they scrambled out of the water, Rat said rather pleasantly, “Cat, I won’t taste a bit good, water soaked like I am. Let me dry off before you eat me!”
“All right. But it had better not take long. Shake yourself and then stretch out here on this grass.”
The rat shook himself. But he didn’t lie down on the grass. He darted to the roots of the nearest tree and burrowed his way out of sight before the cat knew what had happened.
Cat never found Rat. And to this day cats are still hunting rats!
This cat and rat tale is retold merely to get in a few words about friendship and friends.
Whether we’re seeing feast or famine, we need friends. Whether we travel to the East or West, we simply have to have close companions. For, there are many wide rivers to cross.
Trying to make it through this life without friends would be like trying to go through a war without weapons.
In one sense, friendship is a strange thing. That is, in the matter of sharing deep feelings. When we tell a friend of our grief, we have less sorrow. Yet when we communicate our joy, we have more pleasure!
We should not expect perfection in our friends. We want them to overlook our faults; so we must be willing to make allowances for their flaws. Nobody is perfect. In each of us there is a little bit of the rat!
Even so, we can’t do without friends! iŧ w*ş â Wðmän wħö đŗóvē mě tó đŕ*nĸ έ Î nēvēr gót thē çħ*ncě tó tħänk ħěr !! ٱٱٱٱٱٱ |
