The Dhaka Project

Browsing through Flickr today, i came to a picture with a guy holding a big white sheet with the words "The Dhaka Project" written on it. Reading through his description of the picture i came to know of a wonderful initiative taken by an airhostess of the Emirates Airlines to help the underpriveleged in Dhaka.

Maria Conceicao - the airhostess,the founding member, scoped the project out in April 2005 and it was officially launched in July 2005. Since this time she has been joined by a dedicated locally employed team and volunteers from Bangladesh and the world over, who believe in this cause as much as she does which is to run a non profit project that works to provide much needed support to poor families and their children in Dhaka.

Here is the picture which lead me to be aware of this project.

This guy here L’État c’est Moi actually intends to donate 1 dhs for every count that his picture is made a favourite on Flickr.

This guy has even managed to convince his AD agency, where he works, to sponsor Maria and create an awareness program.

The group has now over 850 members.
They have raised around 150 Dollars so far.
Some 100-150 people will move from the Slums to the school and living area on January 14th.
Heres what these ppl need now.

Here's a list of things needed in Dhaka:

Volunteers
children clothes
asian style adult clothes
flip flops
school bags
stationary
school uniforms
school shoes
sweaters
blankets
bed sheets
vaccinations
Research in how to run things in Dhaka
Make a sponsorship form for the program
Hygienic products (soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc.)
towels

Make small booklets for:
How to use a phone
Hygienics (mentioned by Maria before)
-brushing teeth
- prevention of germs
etc.

There will be an update soon in regards to a mailing address and handling.
Maybe you even find people in your area and can send a package together with a few people.


I am surprised that a lot of people from abroad are helping in this and I did not even find one member from Dhaka participating !

This is a simple request to all members here, I believe this is a good way to get involved into something that would help the underpriviledged children in our country.

In 12th or 14th of this month maybe .. not sure .. Maria would be coming down to Bangladesh and move around 50-100 families from their slums into houses.

ok..Maria and her friend is going to be in town within 14-23.
Heres a mail tht she send me.

here are a few tasks my team and I will need help with next few days... If you call Solaiman and visit the project you will have a better idea.Project is located in gawair and I am trying to get all children who are not attending school to be admitted for the new school year starting in two weeks time.
Lot of administration work to be done such as

1. Helping with new admission forms of our new korail slum families members (make sure you have a family profile for each family covering all background of family age etc
2. Finalising school admission forms of our local children
3. Do admission forms of korail children in our school
4. Find houses to our new korail families and paint if necessary
5. Get family profile of all the children we are enrolling in local schools including family history
6. All new children to write a letter of introduction/drawing for sponsorship purposes
7. Measure all the children for their school uniforms ,
8. measure the children for their school shoes and one pair of flip flops

so if anyone..as in ANYONE is interested in helping contact me via a message or post here and i'll be sending you Solaiman's phone number..so that you people can personally get involved!
