JP ( Jatiya Party) asks Armed Forces to Shut Prothom Alo !!

Jatiya Party secretary general Ruhul Amin Hawlader Tuesday asked the armed forces to shut the largest circulated daily Prothom Alo for running a report that spotlights the use of money by two major political camps to rope in HM Ershad. This is a rare public threat by a politician to close down a national newspaper. The Jan 15 report by Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman claimed that the Awami League gave Tk 3.5 crore to the JP to get Ershad in the 14-party alliance. The report also said the BNP gave Ershad Tk 2 crore to get him in its fold but Ershad had to hand the money back under pressure by the BNP, as the former president did not join the four-party alliance. Kazi Zafar said: "Defaming politicians amounts to a crime." "Prothom Alo is relentlessly writing against the BNP, the Awami League and the Jatiya Party. Maybe their aim is to diminish the politicians' image in the public eye," he said. Asked to comment on the allegations made by the Jatiya Party leaders, Prothom Alo chief news editor Sanaullah said Ershad's track record speaks for itself.
